Forum: movies Subject: Three Stooges won't completely download!

Hello....my first post here because I've never had a problem like this before. My first real download over a year and a half ago was that Three Stooges Color Craziness film, found here:
http://www.archive.org/details/TheThreeStoogesColorCraziness
I needed to re-download it again because I never saved the original MPEG2 video and wanted to redo the DVD I had made. HOWEVER.....no matter what I do, when I try downloading it, or which way I attempt to download (either via FTP or HTTP), it never really completes the download. EVERY time I only end up with about 34 minutes of what's supposed to be a 55 minute video. Last year I only had a dial-up connection, and now I have high-speed, so I can't understand why this isn't completing the full-length download. I even asked a friend on the west coast (I'm on the east coast) to try this, and even though he wasn't aware of it, the same darned thing happened to him when he attempted to download it for me.
HELP here! What is going on and how can this be corrected??

This is an easy one to answer. Ignore the Open Source copy you bookmarked and go to:

http://www.archive.org/details/ColorCrazinessTheThreeStooges

It is the original copy found in feature films. Note that it shows a 1.8 gig size instead of the 1.1 gig that shows on the file you asked about. The feature film copy has over 17,000 downloads instead of 750. The file you asked about is only 33 minutes long. I would say it was a failed upload. The three stooges are great. Just go to the feature films Archive and get the full copy. Hope that helps you......

This didn't work AGAIn for me....asked a friend on the west coast to try it for me.

http://www.archive.org/details/ColorCrazinessTheThreeStooges

Last night before turning in, I started the download at 3 a.m., and this morning at 6 a.m. it had only partially downloaded, telling me "the connection timed out"! I did this from the HTTP link on this page:

http://ia300108.us.archive.org/3/items/ColorCrazinessTheThreeStooges

I then, this morning, tried that "direct" link which says MPEG2 (1.8 GB) (right-clicking on that to save it). It seemed to "freeze" up about halfway through, so I cancelled that download. Right now I'm attempting it again from the FTP link here: All files: FTP.

Got it via the FTP link....but the weird thing is that the file I now have says the running time is 54:55 (what it should be)....and yet a few seconds of the compiler's end credits are cut off/not there. Also, the FTP window seemed to "freeze up" with the message "10 seconds remaining", although (almost) the entire video downloaded.

What now?

Hello Greq. I know this won't help you much, but what the heck. I am in Florida. I have a fiber optic cable internet connection. It is almost noon our time local. I noticed this morning about 8 AM that my computer locked up when I tried to download a few simple files (under 20MB) from the stock footage section. I got the download to work so that didn't matter. I saw your post at 11 AM and got curious. I went in and downloaded the stooges as a "save target as" and the download was complete in 40 minutes, no problem. I checked and the file played fine all the way thru, showing 54:55 and all the closing credits. I suspect the Archive was having server problems last night and this morning. You might try again. I regret that I am just an Archive user and can't help you much more than that. Best of luck....

Thanks, I'll try AGAIN another time. I realize the server here can either have problems or be congested based on site traffic/downloading....but this is just more than a bit frustrating. I usually attempt to download from here either late at night or very early in the A.M. hours.

ADDENDUM: I just started downloading it again right after posting this, and right now it's at the "10 seconds remaining" mark, and although the animation of the download...youknow, the little sheets of paper icons that move from one folder to the other....is still moving, it seems to have been "stuck" like that for several minutes already. Will wait a bit longer and see what happens....don't understand why it's doing this. Have a couple of other films I want to try downloading later tonight and see if they give me the same problems.

Try using a third party downloading program that supports resuming interrupted downloads. That way if (when) the download cuts out, you can resume from where you left off.

This is a FAQ, please see When I download concerts, I constantly get disconnected before the download completes. What can I do to fix this?

Okay, I re-read that part of the FAQ's. Do you mean I need to use an actual program instead of this way that Windows XP allows me to simply get to the FTP server by clicking the FTP link on the page, view the files in there, and choose "Copy to folder"? Is this function in XP an actual FTP program, or is it something else, and can it be used somehow to continue the download if it gets interrupted? Like I explained, it gets to about 10% remaing and it freezes up at that point.

NOTE: I downloaded "Werewolf of Washington" with NO problem whatsoever late this afternoon, and for that film I used the HTTP link for it....the one on that film's page which says MPEG2 (2.5 GB)....and I simply chose "Save Target As..." to download it. Took 90 minutes almost, but got the ENTIRE movie. The Stooges film I keep having problems with I was able to download last year with no problem, but now I'm thinking there's a problem with that file and that's why it keeps cutting off before the end credits complete.

Hello Greg. Sorry to hear your not having any luck with this movie. I normally use the MSN/Verizon browser. It has a download manager and works very well for me. As a test, I went into plain old Windows Internet Explorer (I prefer to upload files using that browser). I downloaded the file in 40 minutes, checked it and it worked fine. I know this does not help you, but I have downloaded the file 3 times in 24 hours using 2 browsers and I assure you the file is intact and works fine. I play it on the media player and it plays the ending with no problems. You might want to check your security settings, but if you got Werewolf in Washington, I don't see why this file won't download for you. One final note. Have you checked to make sure you have enough space available on the hard drive? If you downloaded several files/movies lately it could be full. I know it's not likely, but its one of the few reasons I can think of to explain why the file keeps blowing out. Best of luck to you......

PLENTY of drive space (got a 143gb drive, with about 75% space available). I just wonder if....when it gets down to that last 10% remaining....if I'm not waiting long enough for it to complete by itself? BUT then again, that other movie downloaded just fine, and I suspect that two Lugosi films I want to get again will also download fine....Any other ideas as to what's going on with this Stooges film?

Forum: movies Subject: Re: Three Stooges - STILL having problems! :-(

Since the Werewolf is a larger file, and I know the Stooges file is intact it makes no sense to me. I will say that several times in the past I have had to download a movie several times (say, more than 3) to get a good copy. I love the Archive, but it is not uncommon for them to have server problems. They are based in California so they are several hours behind us. If a server goes down or acts up late at night it can be several hours before anyone realizes it. I also believe they often do maintenance on late Thursday night going into Friday. I avoid the archive on weekends, it is just too busy. This is a popular movie, and if several people all start to download the movie at the same time it might overwhelm the server. The weird part is you got Werewolf (A bigger file). That makes me think this file should be a breeze for you. I don't really believe you need a special program to download it, and I don't think the file itself is at fault. I regret I don't have a better answer for you. If it was me, I would just keep trying. Best wishes!

Last night before turning in (around 1:30 am), I started downloading three movies: Phantom Ship, Mysterious Mr Wong, and this Stooges one AGAIN. The other two downloaded perfectly....but not this Stooges one again. Seems no matter what time of day or night, it doesn't quite complete. Yeah, I know it's just a few seconds of the end credits, but still...
